SEATTLE – This week, the world’s largest mathematics convention in the world visits Seattle. The Joint Mathematics Meeting between the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and Mathematical Association of America (MAA) brings 5,500 attendees from across North America to Seattle – filling hotel rooms, restaurants, shops and other businesses during a traditionally lean month, and one that does not – for the first time in three years – include the prospect NFL post-season game-goers.

The convention will contribute a total economic impact of $13.3 million to the city while Seattle. The Washington State Convention Center will host general sessions and other meetings. An estimated 12,847 hotel rooms will be used; official convention hotels include the Sheraton Seattle Hotel (the convention’s host hotel), Crowne Plaza Seattle, Fairmont Olympic Hotel, Grand Hyatt Hotel, Hyatt @ Olive 8, Inn at the Washington Athletic Club, Paramount Hotel, Renaissance Seattle, Roosevelt Hotel and the Westin Seattle Hotel.

Convention attendees visiting Seattle this week include university, college and high school teachers, graduate and undergraduate students, pure and applied mathematicians, computer scientists, statisticians and others. Approximately 25 percent of attendees are students and about 10 percent of all attendees are international.

Peak convention attendance is today through Friday with most convention activities winding down this weekend. Some attendees are expected to remain for post-convention trips in the area.

This is the first time the society has met in Seattle. The meeting was booked by Visit Seattle in 2009 and several pre-convention site inspections by organizers with both associations have been conducted.
